Single Review, online available, Long, Date: That said, if you listen to video or music a lot with the on-board sound system, the ASUS N53SV might not be the perfect machine for you. This is nothing you can't fix with a pair of external speakers or headphones though, so the poor sound quality shouldn't rule this notebook out, in our opinion.

However, the touchpad, keyboard, and lan port all work, and that's all I needed for software development. After all everything has been considered, the ASUS N53SV is a very well-rounded notebook with one glaring exception: the sound system. Overall Review: I was able to get OSX running on the laptop with a lot of work, but I can't get WiFi or sound to work (the Nvidia GPU is entirely out of the question thanks to Optimus). I also tend to browse the web with dozens of tabs open at a time (easily 30+). However, I am using Ubuntu 12.04, and Linux has a history of bad power usage on laptops. Even with disabling the Nvidia GPU and turning the screen brightness all the way down, and even putting the laptop into power-save mode, I'm still barely able to squeeze out four and a half hours of use. It took me a long time to get used to typing on it, and I still frequently make mistakes. Gaming is also not too bad with the GT540, but it's getting long in tooth for that.Ĭons: Only one USB 3.0 port, UEFI is kinda buggy, Nvidia Optimus is still a pain on Linux even two years later. It still runs VMs in VirtualBox and KVM without any problems. The Core i7 2670QM is a pretty quick CPU, and the four SODIMM slots made it cheap and easy to fit 16GB of RAM in there. I've been using it for about two years now, and I could see myself continuing to do so for another year or two. Plus, it doesn't look half bad for something that isn't a Macbook. Pros: Reliable, reasonably fast, awesome screen, good speakers, 4 SODIMM slots for RAM, discrete GPU, decent touchpad, and all for less than $1000.
